Ausklappen Einklappen What is (digital) storytelling?
Storytelling
„Stories have themes, messages, and morals to learn. Understanding the gist of the story with the help of the pictures encourages a more top-down approach to listening and comprehension, rather than the bottom-up approach in traditional textbooks categories (Povey, 2019, p. 3).”
„Young learners
- enjoy listening to stories
- are personally involved (identify with the characters)
- gain knowledge and understanding not only of their own everyday life but of other places, people and beliefs …
- are given examples of how problems can be solved (Haudeck, n. d., p. 9).”
„Digital storytelling combines the age-old practice of storytelling with digital technologies to create short-form videos called digital stories (Schuch, 2020, p. 173).”
„Digital storytelling combines the art of telling stories with a mixture of digital media, including text, pictures, recorded audio narration, music and video. These multimedia elements are blended together using computer software, to tell a story that usually revolves around a specific theme or topic and often contains a particular point of view (Robin, 2016, p. 18).”

Three main phases in the process of storytelling
Pre-Storytelling
„Set the stage, pre-teach key vocab, activate prior knowledge, introduce the main protagonist(s), make the children curious … (Haudeck, n. d., p. 19).”
While-Storytelling
„1st presentation of the story – listen for gist (+ perform actions /guess/predict …)(Haudeck, n. d., p. 21).”
„ 2nd presentation of the story – listen for details/have a closer look at the illustrations/elicit initial language production from children (e.g. repetitive elements) (Haudeck, n. d., p. 21).”
Post-Storytelling
„Check comprehension through reconstructive activities and displays (listen + match / sequence / draw / roleplay (Haudeck, n. d., p. 21).”
