Keep evidence visible
Use the complete picturebook as the primary source for analysis. Publisher and creator pages help identify books and locate legitimate samples or resources; a promotional synopsis cannot establish every linguistic or visual feature.
Foundations
- Supplied analysis framework: “Analysing Picture Books to Further Language Learning”, adapted from Riehemann (2006), p. 174. The course framework preserves its A–D structure and adds explicit EFL and representation questions.
- Riehemann, Stephanie (2006): Emotionale und (schrift-)sprachliche Förderung mit Bilderbüchern. In R. Bahr and C. Iven (eds.), Sprache, Emotion, Bewusstheit. Beiträge zur Sprachtherapie in Schule, Praxis, Klinik. Idstein: Schulz-Kirchner. Consult the supplied seminar copy.
- Reckermann, Julia, and Frauke Matz (2025): Addressing Racism with Young Language Learners through Picturebooks. CLELE Journal, 13(2), 73–97. Use it to question selection, representation and teacher mediation.
- British Council TeachingEnglish: Learning English through children’s literature — additional teacher-development resource from the project brief.
Read-alouds and teaching resources
The official All Are Welcome resource page includes a Brightly read-aloud and educator materials. The publisher page for The Day You Begin also links a Brightly read-aloud. Preview any video, its captions and its pacing before use. Provide an image description or live reading alternative as needed. Links do not replace access to the full book for your analysis.
How the collection is maintained
Each portrait separates evidence from teaching proposals. Eleven titles came from the original shortlist; six are suggested additions, including two openly licensed Book Dash books. The status “Reviewed supplied scan” records the basis of two earlier analyses, not an available download. Their scene-based models can be used with authorised copies. Record the edition and review scope for any further review.
Bibliographic correction: Children in Our World: Culture and Diversity is by Marie Murray, illustrated by Hanane Kai. Publication years vary across editions and territories; check the copy you actually analyse.

The Book Dash covers in the collection are reproduced under CC BY 4.0, with creator and publisher credit, source and licence links. Book Dash reuse guidance explains its attribution and logo requirements. Public visibility alone is not a reuse licence: obtain permission or another valid basis before adding commercial covers or book scans.
